1. Physical Symptoms of Heroin Use

Heroin affects a person’s physical wellbeing in a number of ways. Some of the symptoms of someone using heroin include:

  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Cottonmouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Withdrawal symptoms, including pain, shaking, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Cough and respiratory infections
  • Slurred speech
  • Small pupils
  • Extreme itching

Many diseases can also cause a number of these symptoms. Heroin use comes with other signs to watch out for.

2. Cognitive Changes

Heroin attaches to opioid receptors in the brain and causes a number of chemical reactions. This causes a number of cognitive changes.

The flood of endorphins often causes euphoria. The user may also appear sleepy and nod out. Sometimes the drug causes an opposite effect and the person may seem extremely agitated.

Taking enough heroin may cause hallucinations and delusions. This may lead to extreme paranoia.

3. Behavioral Issues

As an addict loses control, they need more of the drug to feel high and will often do anything to get it. This leads to serious behavior issues.

To cover up any suspicion, they will hide their drug use at all costs. You may notice that they lie about things, like where they are going or who they are with.

Heroin addicts often engage in illegal activities as well, such as stealing and selling drugs to support their habit. This can lead to their arrest and imprisonment.

4. Poor Hygiene

You can actually see some of the obvious signs and symptoms of heroin use. As they focus more on the drug, the user pays less attention to their hygiene.

You may notice that they change clothing less often, or do not shower regularly. Often addicts appear unkempt and may smell bad.

5. Lack of Money

People who use heroin often lose the ability to pay their bills. They may suddenly start begging to borrow money yet have nothing to show for it.

This might happen as they spend everything on buying drugs. It might also occur if they lose their job from skipping work or not fulfilling their duties. Fortunately, once people seek help, they typically enjoy life the way they used to.

6. Loss of Social Life

If you notice a major change in social behavior, your loved one may be using heroin. Users often withdraw from friends and family.

They may start hanging out with new people who might seem “seedy”. An addict will also lose interest in activities they once loved.

Pay Attention To Symptoms of Heroin Abuse

If you notice signs and symptoms of heroin use, take it seriously so your loved one does not become a statistic. Rehab provides care that gets people healthy and then teaches them how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
