6 Myths about Laptop Batteries

The life of a laptop battery is a very crucial concern for all, as one cannot imagine a day without their laptop. No one wants their laptops to stop working while working on important tasks or watching a movie. Though buying a laptop battery online is important, it is also important to know about the myths and their truths about laptop batteries as well.

Extending the lifespan of laptop batteries depends on some special maintenance tips, but it is not good to follow the wrong concepts. Here is a small discussion regarding six persistent myths regarding laptop batteries so that you can take better care of them.

Myth #1: If you don’t disconnect the laptop after it gets fully charged, you will definitely damage the battery

Go for a quick Google search, and you can easily find various news clips regarding some fire incidents due to the computers and smartphones which have been “overcharged”. So this argument seems to be right. Let’s know the facts before you buy a laptop battery online.

The actual fact

It is a technological fallacy that has been circulating for a long period of time. What you need to know about computer batteries nowadays is that they’re carefully designed with special internal circuits that are capable of stopping the process of charging, the second it becomes full.

These systems can easily prevent laptop batteries from overcharging. Nowadays, the batteries may be overheated only when the system of charging becomes dysfunctional.

Myth #2: “Over-charging” the laptop battery can turn it into a desktop

You may have seen one or two laptops, which become unable to turn on without being plugged in. Does this mean that those have become desktop computers?

The Truth

The answer is, of course, NO. Contrary to this belief, which is popular, your laptop battery does not follow a pattern of charging/discharging, and it does not get “addicted” to the AC power. The laptop batteries of recent times have been designed and created to stop the charging process once the battery gets full so those cannot be “overcharged”.

Myth #3: Replacing the batteries which are malfunctioning is an easy task

Many popular laptop companies sell replacement batteries for laptops on their company websites. Before ordering those replacements, you need to be aware of one thing.

The reality

Changing the power source of the device isn’t as easy a task as it seems. If you’re not well aware of the technical aspects of the laptop batteries, you might order the model which is not right. It can become more complicated if you have an Apple laptop. They come with batteries that are in-built, so you cannot replace them yourself if you’re not a licensed IT professional.

Myth #4: Using the laptop while charging may shorten the lifespan of the battery

This is one of the well-known myths that anyone will tell you. This one has been circulating as the main culprit as to why the laptop batteries cannot last more than a few years.

The Truth

Keeping the equipment plugged in doesn’t do any damage to the battery. What can actually harm it? The answer is heating. Although you may say that plugging in the device can easily heat up the battery much faster, it actually needs a high workload that can cause the problem of heat. A processor which is overworked is the actual reason that the device becomes really hot at times. So, keep in mind this before buying a laptop battery online.

Myth #5: Wait for the laptop battery to run low before charging it

This statement only applies to the old battery technology. The notebook computers of most recent times often have the lithium-ion variety that works much better than those older nickel-based ones.

The Truth

The fact can be like this: Li-ion batteries may last much longer if you don’t let them drain completely. When you make this type of mistake, the laptop can get confused by the extreme discharges and thus subsequently show incorrect estimates on how long the power source may last.

Myth #6: Charge the battery of your laptop to full power right out of the box

If you have devices that may run on the nickel-based battery of the older times, this myth probably applies till now. However, the notebook batteries of today do not abide by those similar rules.

The Truth

If the manual says that it runs on lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, it isn’t important to follow this old advice. It’s important to keep in mind that most new batteries have the power of self-calibrating and are developed to use as soon as they get turned on. However, it’s still better to charge the device beforehand to ensure good calibration.

All of these myths can easily affect your mind while you plan to buy a laptop battery online, so it’s good to know about the truths and follow those.
