5 Ways to Protect Your Technology

Every day, 30,000 websites are hacked every day. And 64% of companies say they’ve experienced at least one cyberattack.

Successful cyberattacks can be devastating, but especially so if you’re a business owner. For many small businesses, they end up closing down within a year of an attack.

How can you prevent this from happening? By being proactive!

Here are 5 ways to protect your technology.

1. Have up-to-Date Antivirus Software

One of the easiest and simplest ways to protect against cyberattacks is to have robust antivirus software, as well as an active firewall. The former will detect any malicious files and the latter will block unwanted traffic in your network.

You need to also keep these things updated. Updates and patches come out because developers have found vulnerabilities and are plugging them up. Make sure to install these ASAP so hackers don’t get to these vulnerabilities before you can remove them.

2. Use Strong Passwords

Cybercriminals will use something called brute force attacks to try and guess your passwords. So make it harder for them by avoiding the use of dictionary words for your passwords.

Instead, use a generator that’ll give you a string of capital and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols. And make sure to use different passwords for every account so that if hackers do manage to guess 1 password, they only have access to 1 account instead of several.

3. Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an extra layer of security to your passwords. Not only do you have to input your password, but you’ll also have to provide additional information before you can get into your account. This includes codes sent by text message or email.

Considering that the cybercriminal is unlikely to have your phone, this can stop them in their tracks if they’ve managed to get your password.

4. Avoid Using Public Wifi Networks

Public wifi networks are easy to get onto because they aren’t usually password protected. While this might be convenient for you, this is also convenient for hackers.

If you must use public wifi networks, avoid conducting business on them. The less information you input on these networks, the better.

5. Work With an IT Security Company

There’s only so much you can do on your own, especially if you’re not well-versed in technology. These IT professionals can take care of your security needs and your own in-house IT team can focus on the tasks at hand.

IT security services include things like managed cloud services, management of employee data access, data backup, network security, and round-the-clock support. You can pick and choose the services you need so you’re only paying for what you’re actually using.

Always Protect Your Technology

When you protect your technology, it’s not just a one-time thing. It’s important that you are diligent and keep up with the ever-changing landscape so you’re never caught out.

After all, it only takes 1 successful try for a hacker to bring down your company. So make sure you do everything in your power to prevent that from happening!
