Metal roofing has become a popular choice for homeowners because it is durable, long-lasting, and resistant to fire. When you invest in a metal roof for your home, it will create value and protection that lasts years longer than other types of roofs. The metal roofing process is also relatively easy to install and maintain. With the help of a professional roofer, like James Kate Construction: Roofing, Painting & Windows, you can make sure your metal roof is installed properly and stays in good condition for a long time.

Metal roofs are ideal for homeowners who want long-lasting protection. However, there are a few things you should know when it comes to maintaining these roofs. We have compiled 5 tips that will help you stay informed about maintaining and cleaning your metal roof.

Regular Cleaning And Inspections

Cleaning regularly is the best way for a homeowner to keep their metal roof in optimal condition. Regular cleaning will remove dirt, leaves, and other debris from the surface of your roof. These items can damage the surface and accelerate the corrosion of metal roofing material. To avoid damaging your roof, you should clean it at least twice per year – before winter starts (for ice and snow removal) and before summer starts (to clean off dust from roofs). Inspections are also necessary to check for any damage or wear to metal roofs. A professional inspection should be conducted by a qualified professional once every year.

Trim Away Tree Branches

While it is natural to want to protect trees that have become a part of your home, this is the last thing you want to do if you own a metal roof. Over time, branches and twigs can cause damage to the surface of your roof. After heavy windstorms or ice storms, these pieces that remain on the roof can become impaled between the boards and cause small leaks in your roof. In some cases, branches can even cause dents or dings to the surface of metal roofs. To avoid this damage, you should trim away all tree branches within two feet of your roofline.

Additionally, you should remove any loose pieces of bark and smaller twigs that may fall over the side of your roof. This is important because any loose branches or twigs that remain on the roof can create gaps in the surface of your roof. These gaps can lead to more significant problems, including damage over time.

Repair Or Replace Shakes As Needed

Over time, metal roofs can experience a condition called shake damage which refers to the peeling apart of shakes from the main surface of the roof. While this condition may result from natural wear and tear, it can also be caused by water and animal damage. Therefore, shake repair or replacement is one of the most critical maintenance practices that need to be considered for your metal roof. If you notice any shakes peeling away from the surface of your roof, you should immediately schedule a consultation with a local roofing contractor to assess the damage. Once a determination is made as to the cause of shake damage, repair or replacement will need to be done.

Maintain Rooftop Gutters And Downspouts Properly

Just as with regular roofs, a metal roof does not function well without the proper installation of gutters and downspouts. In addition, if your downspouts are clogged with debris, it can cause water to do more damage to your roof. So, be sure that gutters and downspouts are kept in good working order. If you notice any problems with your gutters or downspouts, contact a qualified roofing contractor for an assessment of the damage.

Give It  A Final Touch

A metal roof can be an attractive addition to a house in the right environment, but it could become an eyesore if your home doesn’t have a good backstop or side protection. A metal roof is strong and durable, but it does have some limitations. If you’re considering putting one on your home, make sure you do everything possible to make it eye-catching.

Metal roofs are an excellent investment for residential homes, and once you have them installed, you can enjoy them for decades. However, metal roofs do require more maintenance than other types of roofs. Therefore, if you own a metal roof, it is important to keep an eye on them and check up on them periodically.
