5 Things You Should Know About the AIR JORDAN Sneaker

Every once in a while, I get a little intimidated when I’m working with a big brand. But when I found out that  jordan 1’s low was one of the clients for this project, I was like: “This is crazy.” I used to work out in Jordan sneakers in my high school days.

I was asked to create five illustrations of the Air Jordan shoe. I love the fact that each sneaker has its own story. It’s a great opportunity to explore different ideas and drawing styles. So, whether you’re an illustrator or just a curious designer, here are five things you should know about the AIR JORDAN sneaker.

Since its debut in 1985, the Air Jordan sneaker has revolutionized the world of sports and streetwear. With designer Tinker Hatfield at the helm, Nike’s Michael Jordan-inspired sneaker was originally meant to be a basketball shoe. However, it soon became more than that. It became an icon.

In recent years, the Air Jordan has become a staple in fashion culture, with many new models and collaborations being released each year. But in order to learn about these new releases, you must first learn about the history of Air Jordans. Here are five things you should know about the iconic sneaker:

  •   History

The sneakers were first released in 1985 and then retroed in 1994, 2001-2004, 2008-2009, 2011-2012, 2013-2014 and 2015- 22.

The shoes were designed for Nike by Peter Moore, Tinker Hatfield, and Bruce Kilgore.

The Jordan IIIs was also famous for appearing in the film Do the Right Thing with Spike Lee playing Mookie. The Jordan III’s had a new design that was dominated by the elephant print on the toe and heel and had a visible air unit on the heel. They also introduced a Jumpman logo. Following the release of the Air Jordan III’s there was a promotion to get people to buy them called Air Jordan Flight School at Skyline High School where they played basketball. In 2007 it was announced that they will be retorting them all with some minor changes like colors will be very similar to originals and they will have laser printing instead of just painting.

  •   It Wasn’t Always Called “Air Jordan”

Originally, Air Jordan was known simply as the “Jordan I” when it launched in 1985. It was only after this release that Hatfield and Nike decided to give each model a number and name them after their signature athlete.2

  •   The Jumpman Logo Was Introduced with the Air Jordan III

When designing the third installment of the popular basketball sneaker, Hatfield worked with artist Peter Moore on creating a logo for it. The result? A silhouette of Michael Jordan mid-flight dunking, which became one of the most iconic logos in sports history.

  •   The Js are for everyone — not just basketball players.

The first pair of Js were made in different sizes to fit Michael Jordan’s feet and weren’t even released until after he’d worn them on the court. Now, they’re made in men’s, women’s and kid’s sizes and are sold all over the world.
