5 Things to Know Before Getting a Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve is a weight loss surgery that removes part of the stomach and reshapes it into a tube-like shape. The procedure is performed by making a small incision in the upper stomach area, then removing a portion of the stomach to form what resembles a banana-shaped pouch.

The surgery is considered minimally invasive, meaning there are only small incisions made in the body during the procedure. This leads to less pain, faster recovery times and less scarring than other weight loss surgeries. How much does gastric sleeve cost in Sydney? Gastric sleeve surgery is a very popular weight loss procedure in Australia. Its cost depends on the clinic you choose, but it usually ranges between $6,000 and $8,000. The gastric sleeve has been approved by the FDA as an effective treatment for obesity and can help you lose up to 30 pounds or more in one year. If you’re considering getting a gastric sleeve, here are five things you should know:

  • The same as gastric bypass or gastric banding

Gastric sleeve is a form of bariatric surgery that removes sections of the stomach and leaves a smaller pouch, which restricts food intake. Gastric bypass and gastric banding also restrict food intake; however, both result in an intestine bypass or restriction to prevent absorption of calories and nutrients from food. The difference between the three procedures is their impact on the size and shape of your stomach. Gastric sleeve doesn’t change the shape of your stomach; it just removes sections of it.

  • Effective for Weight Loss

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that about half of gastric sleeve patients lose at least 50 percent of their excess body weight after three years, and one third achieve complete resolution of obesity after five years.

  • Less Invasive Than Other Weight Loss Procedures

The general idea behind the procedure is to remove part of the stomach so that you feel full faster and for longer periods of time. The surgeon makes a vertical cut in your abdomen and removes about 80 percent of your stomach. This leaves a tube-shaped pouch, which is about the size of an egg yolk or small orange. The remaining stomach tissue stretches out over time as you eat less food and lose weight, which helps keep you from feeling hungry all the time.

  • It’s a Permanent Solution

If you want to be able to eat whatever you want whenever you want, then gastric sleeve surgery may not be right for you. While there are no restrictions on what foods you can eat after getting gastric sleeve surgery, there are limitations on how much food you can eat at once. A standard procedure for postoperative care is that patients should eat slowly and chew thoroughly so their stomach has time to stretch out enough to accommodate more food.

  • It’s not for everyone

Gastric sleeve surgery isn’t right for everyone. You must meet certain criteria before being considered eligible for this procedure. You need to be at least 18 years old, have type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure (hypertension), and have failed multiple attempts at dieting and exercise. In addition, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding or have had certain types of cancer in the past five years (such as colon cancer), then you aren’t eligible for this procedure yet.
