1. Sweep Daily

If your home has a pet, lots of traffic, and numerous rugs, you’ll probably need to sweep your home flooring almost daily. Since the floor is a flat surface, this is the perfect space for any pet hair or outdoor dirt to go sliding across the floor.

2. Take Care of Spills

Spills are unexpected and can happen at any time. If they do happen on your hardwood floor, be sure to clean it up as soon as you see it. Be sure to not use a wet item to clean it up. A wet mop can actually do more harm to your floor.

3. Wood Floor Cleaner

Once a month you should take the time to use wood floor cleaner. You’ll need to know what kind of hardwood flooring you have in order to choose the right cleaning product. Some of these floors require a special cleaner or an additional step in the process. This is so important for your wood floor maintenance plan.

The number one thing to remember is that the cleaner you choose needs to be pH neutral. Some products are safe on wood flooring and others are not, so it is best to ask what your floor needs.

Additionally, if you are using any kind of water on the floor it should be distilled. If you have hard water, or you just aren’t sure, distilled is going to prevent you from worrying.

4. Refinish

When you have hardwood floors, you’ll need to take care of them for life. Refinishing is just another step in the process. This needs to happen every 3-5 years. This depends upon you and your family’s lifestyle.

You should refinish your flooring if you think it looks faded, scratched, or discolored. You’ll go by the instructions on the bottle of the product. By refinishing, you’re going to bring your flooring back to life.
