One of the most alluring parts of being in the military is the honor. You’re doing the noble thing, serving your country, and maybe even earning some significant recognition. 

And how is that recognition bestowed? With medallions, of course. The more army medallions you have decorating your uniform, the more respect you will earn from anyone who sees you.

1. The Purple Heart

The Purple Heart is one of the most widely known army medallions. The award was based on George Washington’s original 1782 design for the Badge of Military Merit

If someone died in battle, even by friendly fire, they posthumously qualify for a Purple Heart medallion.

2. The Distinguished Flying Cross

The Distinguished Flying Cross is for those who have accomplished impressive feats related to air travel. It can be given to army pilots, but it can also be given to those who did not fly in battle. 

Amelia Earhart received a Distinguished flying cross for her bravery in flight.  

Unlike many other medallions, the Distinguished Flying Cross was first awarded in the army.

3. The Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award you can receive in the United States. The President himself must approve the presentation of the Medal of Honor. 

Each branch of the military has its own version of this medal. The Army Medal of Honor dates back to 1862, predated only by the Navy’s version. 

To receive the Medal of Honor, you must go above and beyond the call of duty in your action against an enemy of the United States.

4. Army Challenge Coins

Some of the most unique medallions are challenge coins. Challenge medallions can serve many purposes, and traditionally represent a mixture of brothership and security. 

Challenge coins can confirm your identity to those who need to know it. They can also simply commemorate the strong bonds made during army service.

5. The Silver Star

The Silver Star dates back to 1918. It is the third-highest medal for bravery and exceptional service under fire. Fun fact: the Silver Star was originally called the Citation Star.

One Silver Star recipient, Colonel David Hackworth, received the medal 10 times in his army career.
