5 Important Questions to Ask Your Orthodontist Before Getting Braces

More adults are getting braces these days, as the stigma around older people with braces decreases. In fact, according to a study by the American Association of Orthodontists, there has been a forty percent rise in adults getting braces in the past decade, as 1.4 million patients were above the age of eighteen.

Getting braces is very common for school-aged children, but if you need them when you’re older, there’s no reason not to explore that option.

However, before getting braces, there’s a lot of research to be done. Here are five essential questions to ask your orthodontist before starting your braces journey.

1. Are There Different Types of Braces?

There are metal braces, clear bracket braces, and Invisalign braces. Metal braces are more noticeable but less expensive.

Clear bracket braces are similar to metal braces but have clear brackets instead of metal, making them less noticeable but a bit more expensive.

Invisalign braces are the least noticeable but are more expensive and don’t work for every situation, such as if you have gum disease or cavities.

Work with your orthodontist to see what option will be best for your particular dental situation, and you’ll know you’re getting the best possible treatment.

2. How Long Will I Have Braces?

Treatment times vary from person-to-person because of each unique situation, so it’s an answer only your orthodontist will be able to give you.

If you only need a few fixes, it may be a year or less. If you have a more complex case, it could be a few years.

After taking x-rays and having an initial exam, your orthodontist will be able to tell you their plan and how long they think it will take.

3. What Are the Benefits of Getting Braces?

Some benefits of getting braces include a better ability to chew food, reduced cavities, easier brushing and cleaning of your teeth, reduced grinding, and the alleviation of speech impairments.

Talking to your orthodontist can help you decide why getting braces is right for you, and doing research like reading this article can help you better understand how braces can improve your overall health.

4. Do I Have to Make Lifestyle Changes?

Talking to your orthodontist can help you know how much you’re going to have to commit to bettering your dental health, what foods you will have to avoid, and any other lifestyle changes you’ll have to implement.

This can better your understanding of how getting braces might alter your life for a period of time before you make the commitment.

5. What Is the Cost of Getting Braces?

The cost of getting braces depends on a variety of factors such as your age, how complicated your case is, and how long your treatment will last.

Your orthodontist can give you an estimate during your first consultation so you can prepare before you begin your journey.

Preparation for Getting Braces

Getting braces is a huge commitment, and like any commitment, you want to know all you can ahead of time. You can’t always find the answers by doing research because your case is particular to you.

However, doing your own research and talking to your orthodontist can fill in any gaps and prepare you in the best way possible. If you’d like more content like this, check out more of our articles today!
