With the world still recovering from the lockdown and many people forced to work from home, there has never been a more perfect time to hone your sewing skills even if you don’t know jack about sewing.
Check out custom woven labels for clothing if you are interested in the idea of owning a fashion line, believe me, you’ll need to make your custom labels to set yourself aside from competition in the market.
Now, for newbies it may be frustrating to end up with outfits that are worlds apart from what you envisioned in terms of finesse but do not worry. This is normal in the early stages of sewing and as you already know, practise makes perfect.
Just for you! I have compiled hacks and tips to make your sewing process easier onward.
Tip 1: Many authorities share this same opinion in sewing; choosing a quality fabric is considered a prerequisite for a great looking garment. As a newbie you may get confused with terms like taffeta or new jersey silk so it is better to conform with the basic terms like cotton, wool, knit etc when it comes to choosing your fabric.
It is always advisable to buy the exact quantity of fabric plus buffer to correct your mistakes when sewing.
Tip 2: Wash the fabric before sewing. It is observed that most fabrics shrink in wash and this makes them unfit to wear after the first few washes if they were not prewashed.
You can simply wash using a machine or by hand but ensure the wrinkles from washing are ironed out before sewing the fabric.
Tip 3: The luxury of cutting any fabric with blunt or not-so-sharp scissors is too big a risk for you to bear. And the frustration is not from this world, so endeavouring to get really sharp scissors makes cutting all the more fun.
Tip 4: It is not enough to get sharp scissors, you have to cut the fabric properly. Begin by finding the right side. A reliable has this to say about finding the right side: For your knits, stretch it by the crosswise grain – it will curl to the rightside. For wovens usually the right side will look brighter with a good sheen. If you still cannot, look for the selvedge holes – you will find open holes on the wrong side. There may also be thread knots /slubs on the wrong side.
Tip 5: Ensure you have a good enough sewing machine, while some people think you have to get the most fancy sewing machine before you can make a nice outfit. I am here to say that is non existential.
The sewing machine is just a tool and if you don’t have a big budget getting a durable zig zag sewing machine is sufficient for your needs. It is also important to keep the machine in good shape by giving it the care it deserves.
Voila! You can now start sewing.
