3 Things to Consider for a Backyard Makeover

Most people pay more attention to the front yard because it is typically the first thing families and friends see, and backyard is sometimes forgotten. An attractive, beautiful and renovated backyard can become one of the factors that add value to a property. All homeowners dream of having a perfect and impressive backyard. Summer is on the way, it is time to consider doing a backyard makeover, and hopefully have the project finished before the sunny summer arrives.

As most other projects, a backyard makeover needs you to think through and plan ahead in order to build a backyard space where you can relax and unwind throughout the year. Here I listed 3 tips for you to consider before you start a backyard makeover project.

What do you expect to Spend?

First thing comes first—set a budget. Once you have set a budget, try not to overrun the budget. It is not hard for a budget overrun to occur in a renovation project. A lot of construction projects get paused half way through and fail to complete due to the lack of funds. However, you can expect to spend a little more money once you start the project. Expert says it is fine to spend around 15% extra of original budget.

Observe and Get Started

After a budget is set, go out to your backyard and observe. What do you need to observe? Whether you can expand the fence, whether you have to put up bird bath water fountains, whether you have children or pets that need an outdoor playground and whether you want to remove an old tree or not, are just some of things you need to take into account when you get a project started. If there is an old tree or stump that you want to remove in your backyard, you can hire an arborist to do the job for you.

Another important thing to consider is the landscapes. When it comes to landscapes, you should consider the plants or ground material that you want to use in order to build a low-maintenance backyard that requires less time and work in the long run.

Create Defined Spaces

Creating separate spaces is a must in a backyard makeover. Different spaces that have different functions allow you to make the most out of a backyard. For example, you could set an area for cooking and dining. Consider if a child-friendly playground area with a tree swing, or an area where you can relax and treat yourself in a hot tub or a spa is needed.

There are even different types of backyard cabins available in the market that you can purchase. Those backyard cabins have a surprisingly wide-range of use that can instantly improve the functions of a backyard. For example, you could turn a backyard cottage into a study room, home office, outdoor kitchen, extra guest room that you can rent on AirBnB for extra cash, or even a room for you to hang your boxing bag. The location is crucial if you consider getting a backyard cottage, you might want to place it in a location that has an easy access to home.
