What are your feelings about artificial intelligence? Many Americans are somewhat worried about a future where AI and robots can take over human jobs, but AI has the room to be an amazing boon to humanity.

Artificial intelligence is often misunderstood by us, and in this article, we’re going to dispel some myths and offer some fascinating artificial intelligence facts in return.

Are you ready to learn more about artificial intelligence, its history, and more? Then read on!

Table of Contents

  • 1. Artificial Intelligence Is Older Than You Think
  • 2. Artificial Intelligence Is Already Being Used
  • 3. AI Can Imitate Humans
  • These Artificial Intelligence Facts Have Just Scratched the Surface

1. Artificial Intelligence Is Older Than You Think

One of the most shocking facts about artificial intelligence is that it’s a lot older than you might think. Humans have theorized about artificial intelligence since ancient times: the Greeks created the myth of an automaton called Talos, who would protect Crete and was made of bronze.

The first practical artificial intelligence was created in 1951 in the United States, and it was called SNARC, which stood for stochastic neural analog reinforcement calculator. This neural network was primitive, but the next year, Arthur Samuel developed a checkers-playing program that could learn by itself.

2. Artificial Intelligence Is Already Being Used

Artificial intelligence is already being used all around us: it’s not simply a proposal for the future, and we use it every single day. The spam filters in our email inboxes use AI to recognize spam emails, and commercial flights use autopilot AI to fly us around the globe.

Apps like Uber use AI to predict passenger activity and how many taxis will be needed in a certain area. Fraud prevention is driven by AI, which can recognize fraudulent transactions with a great success rate.

It’s only going to become more common too, with 5G and smart devices expected to become a key part of the supply chain, as many a global macro outlook will attest.

3. AI Can Imitate Humans

Alan Turing, one of the fathers of computer science, created a test called the imitation game, which became known as the Turing Test. This test aims to tell humans from machines and see whether a machine can pass as a human.

In 2014, the first AI passed the Turing Test. This AI, called Eugene Goostman, imitated a 13-year-old boy and convinced a third of its judges that it was human. To pass the test, an AI needs to be unrecognized by 30 percent of its judges.

As AI develops, we’ll likely see more and more AIs that are able to pass as humans, which poses some ethical problems for artificial intelligence research and deployment.

These Artificial Intelligence Facts Have Just Scratched the Surface

We hope that you’ve enjoyed this look at some fascinating artificial intelligence facts. One of the most interesting facts about artificial intelligence, and something that we need to grasp, is that AI isn’t going anywhere. It’s already all around us, and we’re soon going to have to get used to the idea of sharing our planet with intelligent machines of our own design.
