Tenet is an upcoming Action Sci-Fi directed by Christopher Nolan and written by Nolan “Tenet” Christopher Nolan’s birthday party had a bittersweet tone. The Briton turned 50 last week with the halo of being one of the most respected filmmakers of his generation; but Tenet, his latest film and the one that could mark the pinnacle of his cinematic style, has suffered a stormy wave of delays in its release date. Some analysts predict a very bad prognosis. Tenet switched places with local juggernaut The Eight Hundred on Saturday in China. The films were in a close race for the No. 1 slot, but the Chinese war epic slightly edged Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller, by an estimated difference of about $1.3M. The Middle Kingdom cume on Tenet is estimated at RMB 143M ($21M and including previews), through Saturday per Maoyan. That portends a weekend at around $30M, lower than where some were seeing it ahead of the launch. However, as we’ve noted previously, The Eight Hundred was always going to be a factor, and Nolan’s films tend to leg out

Tenet is carrying an 8.4 audience score on Maoyan and an 8 with Douban critics. It added an estimated $11.8M on Saturday for a 37% jump from Friday. It currently leads presales on Sunday, so could still eke out a No. 1 win for the weekend, but it may be tight.

‘Tenet’ Gets a B CinemaScore, Christopher Nolan’s Lowest Since ‘The Prestige’

Audience word-of-mouth is in on Christopher Nolan’s time-bending return to screens “Tenet.” According to CinemaScore, which polls audiences to grade films on a scale from F to A+, “Tenet” has received a B rating. That’s not a death knell, but it’s likely below expectations for audience-beloved Nolan and “Tenet” distributor Warner Bros., already fielding mixed reviews for the movie starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson (including from IndieWire). It’s Nolan’s lowest since “The Prestige,” one of the filmmaker’s more modest-grossing, and also more modestly budgeted, efforts.

Past Nolan CinemaScores are as follows: “Insomnia” (2002): B; “Batman Begins” (2005): A; “The Prestige” (2006): B; “The Dark Knight” (2008): A; “Inception” (2010): B+; “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012): A; “Interstellar” (2014): B+; and “Dunkirk” (2017): A-. To be fair, the “B” stamp is also the first CinemaScore we’ve seen in some time, though YA dramedy “Words on Bathroom Walls” did score an A. (CinemaScore also reportedly doesn’t list movies on less than 1,500 screens on its website. “Tenet” is right now on about 2,800 screens in the United States.)
