10 Effective Ways to Secure Your Apartment

Are you worried about the security of your apartment? You should be! There are a number of things you can do to improve its security and make yourself less of a target for all sorts of crimes. We’ve come up with 10 ways to secure your apartment and ensure your and your family’s safety.

But first, it goes without saying that when looking for new apartment developments Sydney, choose an area known to be peaceful. But even then, consider the tips below.

  1. Change the locks.

The first thing you should do when moving into an apartment is change the locks. You never know who has a key to your new home, even if it was recently vacated by another tenant. It’s always better to be safe than sorry! If changing all of them seems like too much work or expense, then at least make sure that exterior doors are locked and secure with deadbolts.

Consider having duplicates of these keys for all family members. This way, they can get in touch with you quickly during emergencies or if something happens while you’re away from home (such as break-ins).

  1. Replace old windows and doors.

Old wooden windows and doors may look good aesthetically but they will not last forever, especially when they are constantly being exposed to the weather. If your windows and doors are old and in poor condition, consider replacing them with new, high-security models that will be much more difficult to break into.

  1. Secure entrances and exits.

In addition to locks on exterior doors, make sure all entrances and exits (including fire escapes) are well-lit and secure. Install sturdy fences around your property if it isn’t fenced in yet, and keep gates locked at all times. Consider installing security cameras or alarm systems for even greater protection.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings.

Keep an eye on who is coming in and out of the building, as well as who is loitering around the premises. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, do not hesitate to report it to the police or management.

  1. Be social.

Get to know your neighbours and look out for one another. If you see something strange happening in your building, chances are your neighbour will too. Form a neighbourhood watch group and keep an eye on things together.

  1. Keep valuables hidden.

Don’t leave expensive jewellery or electronics lying around where they can be seen from the window. Keep them locked away in a safe place when you’re not using them.

  1. Install outdoor lighting.

If there is no light outside your apartment, burglars will find it much easier to break in undetected. Install outdoor lighting (or motion-sensitive lights) near entrances and exits to make it more difficult for criminals to operate in the dark.

  1. Be smart about using social media.

Don’t post anything on social media that could give away your location or make you a target for crime. For example, don’t announce that you will be out of town for an extended period of time and leave your house unoccupied.

  1. Get a dog.

Dogs are great deterrents against burglars. They may not be able to stop them from entering but they will certainly bark and make enough noise to draw attention. If you don’t have a pet, consider adopting one. Just remember that pets are family, and not just guards you adopt to bolster your safety—treat them as such!

  1. Create a home security checklist.

To keep all of these tips in mind, create a home security checklist and refer to it regularly. This way, you won’t forget anything.

The best way to secure your apartment is by using a combination of these tips. You might want to consider them all for the best results. Stay safe!
